Chapter 15

“Do you sense it, Rose the Witch?” Willowbee landed on the lounge seat beside her and extended her wings. “There’s heightening magic here in the garden and in the place you wish us to visit.”

Rose shook her head. “I haven’t.” As a witch, should she have? “I mean, any changes would be because of the demon, right?”

“At his behest, yes.” The sprite stroked the sides of her wings as if she groomed their gossamer edges. “This is about more than a demon who means to wed a witch.”

“But the bargain my mother made?”

“She summoned a chaos demon, but a prime demon such as Ignatius would not agree to such a bargain if it didn’t fit his needs.”

“I…” Rose brought her legs up to sit cross-legged style, something she wouldn’t have been able to do a few days ago. “Honestly, maybe I wanted to feel important.” She propped her elbows on her knees and her chin on her steepled fingers. “After being left at the altar, a powerful demon wanted to marry me.” Her breath wavered out of her lungs. “I feel so stupid.”

“Witch or not, you’re the Rose of the Garden, and you are as precious as the rarest of orchids.”

“Thank you.” Rose swallowed against the urge to rush back to the museum. “My friends are in danger. I need to go, and I hope you’ll go with me.”

“Close your eyes,” Willowbee’s voice sounded like the tinkling of bells. “Reach out with your senses.”

A shiver ranged from her head to her toes as Rose closed her eyelids. Then, with no sense of how much time had passed, she became aware that she stood near the koi pond. “How?”

“The power of the portal drew you here.”

As the sprite hovered nearby in a faint hum of wings, Rose blinked and studied the depths of churning, glowing water.

“It appeared,” Willowbee said, “after the foul creature showed up. Fully opened, it will become a passage from the Netherworld so underworld demons and monsters can come through.”

For the longest stretch, Rose stared at the coal-black water with strings of orange twisting through it.

“Our fables tell of demons using witch’s powers to open the gateway between the two worlds.”

A gnome strode out from the bushes. The short, bearded, nearly round guy held a shovel out before him as if he prepared to defend the yard. “The power of a witch will open it, but the bloodshed of witches will keep the gateway open.”

“Blood?” Rose covered her lower face. “How could I have been so foolish?”

“He’s the leader of the gnomes and is wary about sharing his name, especially with one who may be a demon’s cohort. Great King, the witch wishes us to join her in the battle.”

“If we’re to save our garden, such a fight is the only way.” He gestured toward the garden that had been her haven for many years. “I’ll rally the troops.”

“Wait.” Rose sucked in the smell of lavender and cedar as she turned toward the evergreens she decorated for the winter holidays and other year-round celebrations.
